Chloe Smith, University of Alberta student and USS/SUSK leader, empowers Ukrainian youth through campus initiatives, national advocacy, cultural programming, and dance, fostering community and leadership.

Chloe Smith is a fourth-year psychology student at the University of Alberta whose studies are matched by her dedication to leadership and community service within the Ukrainian Canadian community. Originally from Regina, Saskatchewan, she now lives in Edmonton,Alberta, where she has played an active role in cultural and student life.Chloe has served on the executive of the Ukrainian Students’ Society (USS) for four years and is currently President. In this role, she has overseen numerous campus initiatives that foster Ukrainian culture and community among students. She led the committee for the USS 70th Anniversary Zabava, in 2024 the first large-scale celebration the society had organized in years, and worked to expand programming that engaged both students and the broader Edmonton community. As the USS representative to the Ukrainian Canadian Congress – Alberta Provincial Council from 2023 to 2025, Chloe built strong relationships between students and the provincial Ukrainian community, ensuring that student voices were includedin wider conversations.At the national level, Chloe has served on the board of the Ukrainian Canadian Students’ Union (SUSK) for three years, holding the positions of Vice President West, Vice President National, and now Secretary. As VP West and VP National, she focused on rebuilding connections with student organizations across the country and represented SUSK at national advocacy events, including UCC Advocacy Day. In her current role as Secretary, she is developing board governance resources to support future student leaders. Most notably, she served as Chairperson of SUSK Congress 2025, leading a committee to deliver a four-day national conference that brought together leadership development, culturalprogramming, and advocacy.Beyond her student leadership, Chloe has been a dancer with the Vohon Ukrainian Dance Ensemble for over three years and was recently elected to its board of directors. Chloe’s work demonstrates her strong commitment to building community, celebrating Ukrainian identity, and empowering youth leadership. She is honored to be a recipient of theUCC Youth Leadership Award.

The UCC launched the Ukrainian Canadian Youth Leadership Award of Excellence for outstanding leadership in 1998 to give recognition to young adult Ukrainian Canadians that have made significant contributions to the broader Ukrainian community and for the betterment of Canada.
