Andrei Kisil, Edmonton youth mentor and PLAST leader, empowers young people through camps, cultural programs, and community initiatives, fostering leadership, resilience, and Ukrainian heritage.
Andrei Kisil is a dedicated community leader and youth mentor whose work focuses on empowering young people and building stronger cultural connections. Born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, Andrei has been a lifelong member of the youth scouting movement since early childhood, where he continues to volunteer today in various capacities. Through his involvement with the Ukrainian Youth Association PLAST, Andrei has organized countless events that promote leadership, culture, and community engagement.Over the years, he has led youth on outdoor adventures, including camps, marches, and ski trips, while also developing creative projects and cultural celebrations. Andrei has worked as a group leader (виховник), troupe leader (зв’язковий), secretary, branch President (Станичний), and is now currently the Vice-President at his PLAST branch, where he is tasked with training and recruiting staff and assisting with integration of newcomers to the organization. Andrei takes particular pride in running summer youth scout camps as camp director, which he has done for four consecutive years, culminating in this year’s National Jamboree in British Columbia where 273 children and 70 volunteers were present from across Canada. His leadership is grounded in empathy, respect, and a deep belief in the potential of every young person. Whether planning a major event or supporting a child one-on-one, Andrei is committed to creating opportunities for growth, resilience, and belonging.In addition to his work with youth, Andrei also serves as the Vice-President and Communications Director of the Prince Rupert Community League, and is a sitting Director of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress – Edmonton Branch. Andrei has previously received a PLAST Certificate of Accomplishment in 2024 and the Ukrainian Canadian Congress – Alberta Provincial Chapter’s Hetman Award for Youth Leadership in 2023. Outside of his volunteer commitments, Andrei enjoys camping, hiking, and reading, which inspire his creativity and sense of adventure.
The UCC launched the Ukrainian Canadian Youth Leadership Award of Excellence for outstanding leadership in 1998 to give recognition to young adult Ukrainian Canadians that have made significant contributions to the broader Ukrainian community and for the betterment of Canada.
