Since 2015, Andrew Maksymowsky has been an active and dedicated volunteer with the Plast Ukrainian Youth Association, beginning as a counselor as soon as he was eligible. Over the past decade, he has steadily taken on greater leadership roles, mentoring youth, fostering teamwork, and strengthening the Ukrainian Canadian community. As Co-Camp Director for the 2023 Eastern Canada Summer Camp and the 2025 Canada National Summer Camp, Andrew played a pivotal role in organizing large-scale gatherings of Ukrainian youth that foster the development of future community leaders. In 2023, he coordinated logistics, food, equipment, and safety compliance for more than 90 campers and 30 leaders. In 2025, he oversaw operations for over 250 participants, managing food logistics, programming supplies, and the transport of thousands of pounds of equipment from across the country, while also leading risk analysis and safety planning. This significant camp marked the 75th anniversary of Plast camps in Canada. When 2025 flight disruptions stranded campers, Andrew and his fellow directors acted quickly, communicating, coordinating relocation, and ensuring the safety and comfort of all participants.Beyond Plast, Andrew has chaired the Engineering Idol Competition with Professional Engineers Ontario for the past five years, introducing high school students to the engineering profession and its critical role in public safety. He is also an active parishioner at Christ the Good Shepherd Ukrainian Catholic Church, where he supports parishioners and contributes to community life.Through his initiative, communication skills, and ability to build strong teams, Andrew has consistently demonstrated outstanding leadership. His contributions have not only shaped the lives of Ukrainian youth but also strengthened the profile of the Ukrainian Canadian community.
The UCC launched the Ukrainian Canadian Youth Leadership Award of Excellence for outstanding leadership in 1998 to give recognition to young adult Ukrainian Canadians that have made significant contributions to the broader Ukrainian community and for the betterment of Canada.
