Lesia Bonk, a longtime UCC-Toronto leader, has grown the Independence Day Festival into North America’s largest and champions community, culture, and support for Ukraine.
Lesia Bonk has been a dedicated leader in the Ukrainian Canadian Community for many years.She has served on the UCC- Toronto board since 2012.Lesia has co-chaired the planning and organizing committee of the largest annual UCC event in Toronto, Ukrainian Independence Day Celebration since 2012. Under her leadership Festival attendance has grown to over 30,000 visitors and is now recognized as the largest Ukrainian Independence Day Celebration in North America. This celebration raises significant funds for UCC-Toronto while engaging the local community.Since 2020 Lesia has been a vital Executive member of UCC-Toronto board as VP-Operations.She has been a leader for many planning groups of UCC events including Holodomor Committee, Stand with Ukraine, Remembrance Day and Vyshyvanka day.A defining characteristic of her work is the ability to actively engage and include a wide variety of community members to join in the call to participate and contribute for whatever job needs to be done.In 2010, Lesia was an election observer in Ukraine.When the war in Ukraine began, Lesia became a member of the Resettlement committee - Working group on Displaced Persons and Refugees from 2022-2024. She also volunteered at UCC-Toronto Parachute Donation Centre from 2022 until closing 2024.As a longtime member of Ukrainian Youth Association (CYM), Lesia had achieved the Second level Suspilnyk award for leadership and active work (contributing and volunteering) in 2023.Lesia is married to Roman Bonk, mother to Anastasia and proud grandmother to Liam.
