Speaker's bio

Olena Shyian immigrated to Regina from Ukraine in 2007, finding a “little Ukraine” within the Ukrainian National Federation. She believes in the active decision of many Ukrainians in Canada- By honouring the past, we are able to strive forward in building the future. As a teacher for 24 years and mom of two busy daughters, Olena values investing in youth programs and cultural education. In 2009, she helped revive Regina’s Ridna Shkola Ukrainian Language School, offering classes for children ages 3–13 in language, cultural arts, and traditional songs.In addition to these efforts, Olena worked to revive the UNYF branch in Regina. Passionate about preserving Ukrainian heritage, Olena works to revive traditions and foster identity within Canada’s Ukrainian diaspora. She is involved with many Ukrainian organizations, serving as Vice-President of UNF Foundation and Vice-President of UNF National. As president of UNF Regina, Olena’s focus is to build community through volunteering, newcomer support, educational programs, dance, and community gatherings. In 2023, she received the UCC-SPC Community Recognition Award for Leadership and Volunteerism.
