Irena Dounets is the Executive Director of the St. Demetrius Development Corporation in Toronto, which operates the Ukrainian Canadian Care Centre (a long-term care home for seniors) and the St. Demetrius Apartments (apartment building for independent living seniors). Irena has over 18 years of experience in progressive leadership roles in long-term care, community programs and recreation therapy for seniors. Prior to her current position, she was a Director of Resident Programs and Volunteer Services for Revera Inc. Elginwood Long-Term Care Centre and a Director of Programs for Ukrainian Canadian Care Centre, and The Rekai Centres – Wellesley Central Place.

In her capacity as Executive Director, Irena is responsible for ensuring compliance with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care legislation, regulations, quality standards and policy requirements. In conjunction with the Board of Directors and key stakeholders, she ensures the development and implementation of new and existing programs and services for seniors, initiates and develops viable community partnerships to advance the organization’s growth and development.

Under Irena’s leadership, the St. Demetrius Development Corporation has made big strides towards expanding its community programs and services for seniors, while at the same time embarking on a transformational change of the organization’s long-term care model, with a focus on dementia care.

Irena is actively involved in the Ontario’s leading senior care associations, i.e. the Alliance Group and Advantage Ontario, where she sits on the associations’ Executive Committees. She has made valuable contributions to the associations’ advocacy, community partnerships and senior care initiatives.

Irena strongly believes in working in an atmosphere of continual change, learning and development. She is driven by a commitment to senior care and a passion for an organizational culture of high professional standards, learning and innovation, where she and her team create change and deliver the most needed and best possible care and services for seniors.
